Study in Germany: Admissions, Scholarships and Student Visa
Studying in Germany: how we help
Global Careers guides students from Surat and across India on studying in Germany: choosing the course and universities, preparing the applications, applying for scholarships and preparing the student visa application. Many public universities in Germany charge little or no tuition. Indian applicants need an APS certificate, and the visa requires proof of funds, usually through a blocked account.
Our advice begins with the student: the right course first, then the right country and university. For how we work, see study abroad consulting. For the visa, see student visa guidance.
Studying in Germany: the essentials
- Applying: to the university directly or through uni-assist, depending on the university. Applicants from India need an APS certificate, issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre in New Delhi, before they apply for the visa.
- Bachelor’s degrees: most are taught in German, and an Indian Class 12 certificate does not always give direct entry. Check the requirement for your board and marks first.
- Master’s degrees: many are taught in English. This is the route most Indian students take.
- Intakes: the winter semester (October) is the main one. Some courses also start in the summer semester (April).
- Fees: most public universities charge low tuition fees or none, with some exceptions, plus a semester contribution. Living costs still have to be shown through a blocked account, whose amount is set each year.
- After the degree: graduates can apply for a residence permit to look for work that matches the degree.

How we work with students applying to Germany
Germany rewards planning and punishes haste. Admission to a Master’s depends on how closely the first degree matches the course, module by module, and the APS certificate and the blocked account both take time. We start with the match between the degree and the course, and build the timeline backwards from the visa.
The full process, from the choice of course to the visa, is described under study abroad consulting.

Graduates can apply for a residence permit to look for a job related to their degree. The current terms are on Make it in Germany, the German government’s portal.
