Study in France: Admissions, Scholarships and Student Visa

Study in France

Studying in France: how we help

Global Careers guides students from Surat and across India on studying in France: choosing the course and universities, preparing the applications, applying for scholarships and preparing the long-stay student visa (VLS-TS) application. France has public universities and selective Grandes Écoles and business schools, and many Master’s programmes are taught in English. Indian applicants complete the Campus France procedure before applying for the visa.

Our advice begins with the student: the right course first, then the right country and university. For how we work, see study abroad consulting. For the visa, see student visa guidance.

Study in France

Studying in France: the essentials

  • Applying: students living in India apply through the Études en France procedure, run by Campus France India, which also handles the interview that precedes the visa.
  • Where: public universities, the grandes écoles, and specialised schools of business, engineering, art and design.
  • Intakes: September. Some schools also admit in January.
  • Length: three years for a Licence (bachelor’s) and two years for a Master.
  • Language: many Master’s and business school programmes are taught in English. Most bachelor’s degrees at public universities are taught in French.
  • Visa: the long-stay student visa, which also serves as a residence permit (VLS-TS).

How we work with students applying to France

In France the kind of institution matters as much as the subject. A grande école, a public university and a private business school offer different things at very different prices. We help the student compare them, check how each degree is recognised, and prepare for the Campus France interview.

The full process, from the choice of course to the visa, is described under study abroad consulting.

Frequently asked questions

Through the Études en France online procedure. The student creates a file with Campus France India, applies to the chosen institutions, attends an academic interview and then applies for the visa. Some business schools also take applications directly.

Not for a programme taught in English, though some French helps with daily life and with work after the degree. For most bachelor’s degrees at public universities, French is required.

International students may work part time within an annual limit, and graduates of Master’s-level degrees can apply for a temporary permit to look for work or start a business. The current terms are on Campus France India.

Public universities charge fees set by the state. Business schools and private institutions charge much more. We prepare a cost sheet for every university on the shortlist: tuition, living costs, insurance and travel for each year of the degree. Plan on meeting the full cost without income from part-time work.

No. Global Careers guides students on admissions and student visas only. Permanent residency and work visas are immigration matters decided by the government of France, and the rules change often. Please check the official government website.
