Study in India: Admissions to New-Age Universities such as Ashoka, FLAME, Krea and NMIMS

Studying in India: where we help

Global Careers guides students on admission to Indian universities: which course to choose, which universities to apply to, which entrance exams to write, and how to prepare the profile and applications that universities such as Ashoka, FLAME, Krea and NMIMS ask for. We advise on the choice of entrance exam. We do not coach for Indian entrance exams.

A growing number of students who could study abroad are choosing to stay in India, at universities that offer flexible, multidisciplinary degrees and admissions that look at the whole student. Many of these universities ask for more than board marks: essays, activities, aptitude tests and interviews. That is the same preparation we have given students applying abroad since 2000.

Why more families are choosing India

Studying abroad has always carried risks that a family cannot control: visa rules, exchange rates and events in the host country. In the past few years India has gained universities that offer flexible, multidisciplinary degrees and admit students on the whole application, not on one exam.

For a student who wants that kind of education, and whose family would rather not take on the cost or the uncertainty of going abroad, these universities are a serious alternative. They also ask for the same preparation: a clear sense of direction, a profile built over time and thoughtful applications.

Two routes to admission in India

  • Admission by rank. For engineering at the IITs and NITs, medicine, the national law universities and most central universities, an entrance exam rank decides: JEE, NEET, CLAT or CUET.
  • Admission on the whole application. Universities such as Ashoka, FLAME, Krea, O.P. Jindal, Plaksha and Shiv Nadar look at marks together with some combination of essays, activities, an aptitude test and an interview. Several accept SAT scores.

Many students prepare for both. Which exams to write, and how much time to give each, depends on the course. See entrance exams in India.

Frequently asked questions

No. We advise on which exams suit the student’s goals and how to plan for them. The only tests we coach for are the SAT, GRE and IELTS.

Ashoka, FLAME, Krea, O.P. Jindal, Plaksha and Shiv Nadar are among those that ask for some combination of essays, an aptitude test and an interview in addition to marks. Requirements change each year, so we check each university’s current process.

Several private universities accept SAT scores in place of, or alongside, their own aptitude test. The policy differs by university and by programme, so confirm it on the admissions page before you rely on it.

For rank-based admission, no: the rank decides. For universities that read the whole application, yes, and for scholarships at those universities as well.

Yes. We guide NRI and international applicants on course and university choice and on the applications to Indian universities.

It depends on the course, the cost the family can carry and the student’s readiness. We compare both for the individual student. See how to decide.
