Study in Italy: Admissions, Scholarships and Student Visa
Studying in Italy: how we help
Global Careers guides students from Surat and across India on studying in Italy: choosing the course and universities, preparing the applications, applying for scholarships and preparing the student visa application. Italian public universities set fees according to family income and offer regional scholarships, and many programmes are taught in English. Applicants pre-enrol through the Universitaly portal before applying for the visa.
Our advice begins with the student: the right course first, then the right country and university. For how we work, see study abroad consulting. For the visa, see student visa guidance.
Studying in Italy: the essentials
- Applying: the student applies to the university and completes a pre-enrolment request on the Universitaly portal, which the Italian consulate uses for the visa.
- Length: three years for a Laurea (bachelor’s) and two years for a Laurea Magistrale (Master’s).
- Language: a growing number of programmes are taught in English, mostly at Master’s level.
- Intake: September or October.
- Fees: public universities set tuition according to family income, and regional scholarships are available to international students who qualify.
- Visa: a national study visa, followed by a residence permit applied for after arrival.

How we work with students applying to Italy
Italy attracts students of design, architecture, fashion, engineering and economics, and its public universities cost far less than those in the UK or the USA. The paperwork is the hard part: pre-enrolment, document legalisation and the consulate’s timetable. We plan those dates with the family at the start.
The full process, from the choice of course to the visa, is described under study abroad consulting.
Frequently asked questions
By applying to the university for admission and then submitting a pre-enrolment request on the Universitaly portal. Once the university validates it, the student applies for the study visa at the Italian consulate with the academic documents the consulate asks for.
Yes, mainly at Master’s level and in some bachelor’s degrees. The official Universitaly portal lists them.
Public universities charge according to family income, so the documents that prove income matter. Private universities charge more. We prepare a cost sheet for every university on the shortlist: tuition, living costs, insurance and travel for each year of the degree. Plan on meeting the full cost without income from part-time work.
No. Global Careers guides students on admissions and student visas only. Permanent residency and work visas are immigration matters decided by the government of Italy, and the rules change often. Please check the official government website.
