The GRE is required or accepted for many Master’s and PhD programmes abroad, and many business schools accept it in place of the GMAT. If you are still choosing universities, see MS, MBA and PhD admissions.
Who needs the GRE
The GRE General Test is used for admission to Master’s and PhD programmes, mainly in the USA and also in other countries. Many business schools accept it in place of the GMAT. Some programmes have stopped asking for it, so check each programme before you prepare.
The GRE General Test: format and scoring
| Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Analytical Writing | 1 task (Analyze an Issue) | 30 minutes |
| Verbal Reasoning, section 1 | 12 | 18 minutes |
| Verbal Reasoning, section 2 | 15 | 23 minutes |
| Quantitative Reasoning, section 1 | 12 | 21 minutes |
| Quantitative Reasoning, section 2 | 15 | 26 minutes |
| Total | about 1 hour 58 minutes |
- This shorter format has been in use since 22 September 2023.
- Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning are adaptive by section: the difficulty of the second section depends on how the student did in the first.
- Within a section a student can skip questions, go back and change answers. An on-screen calculator is provided for the Quantitative sections.
- Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored from 130 to 170, and Analytical Writing from 0 to 6.
- Scores appear in the student’s ETS account 8 to 10 days after the test.

How we teach the GRE
- Separate teachers for Verbal and for Quant.
- A study plan for each student, based on where they start.
- Official ETS material, so that practice questions match the real test.
- Full-length mock tests under timed conditions, with a review of the errors.
- Vocabulary through reading and context, not memorised lists.
Small batches. The next batch starts as soon as we have the required number of students to begin. Register your name and we will confirm the start date.
You may attend one class free, as an observer, to see how we teach. To continue after that, you enrol in the batch.
Students guided by Global Careers have been admitted to universities including the University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, LSE, LBS, NUS, NTU and SMU.
Mistakes we see most often
- Practising questions at random, with no plan.
- Working only on Quant and leaving Verbal and Analytical Writing to the last week.
- Too few full-length tests. The GRE is short, but it still punishes poor pacing.
- Memorising word lists without reading. Vocabulary helps only when the sentence is understood.
The GRE Subject Tests
Some programmes also ask for a GRE Subject Test, which is offered in Mathematics, Physics and Psychology. Check each programme’s requirements on its own website. Our coaching is for the General Test.
Frequently asked questions
Two and a half to three months of steady work suits most students. Those who read widely in English often need less for Verbal.
It depends on the programme. Look at the scores each department reports for its admitted students, and remember that for a research degree the score is one part of the application, next to the academic record, the statement of purpose and the recommendations.
For a Master’s in engineering, science or the social sciences, the GRE. For an MBA, most schools accept either. If both are accepted, take the one whose format suits you. See GMAT coaching.
A strong score helps, but funding decisions rest on the whole application. No score makes a scholarship certain.
Some Indian business schools and universities accept GRE scores for certain programmes. Check the programme’s own admissions page.
