Course and College Selection After 12th: Career Counselling in Grades 11 and 12

Which course after 12th?

Career counselling after 12th helps a student choose a degree and a shortlist of colleges that fit the student’s interests, abilities and marks, in India or abroad. At Global Careers in Surat we begin with the student, not with a list of popular courses: the Career Fit assessment, a face-to-face review of the results, and then a recommendation the family can act on.

Ideally the student has been in counselling since Grade 9 or 10 (see stream selection in Grades 9 and 10), so that the course is clear before Grade 11 begins and the last two years of school are used to prepare for it. For a student starting now, Grade 11 is far better than Grade 12, because entrance exams and applications both depend on knowing the course early. If the board results are already out, we work with the options that are still open this year.

What we help you decide

  • Course: the degree that fits the student, including options many families have not looked at, such as liberal arts, design, economics, psychology, data science, law and integrated management programmes.
  • India or abroad: a plain comparison of cost, admission chances and career prospects for this particular student.
  • Colleges: a balanced shortlist of ambitious, realistic and safe choices.
  • Entrance exams: which ones to write, for example JEE, NEET, CUET, IPMAT, CLAT or the SAT. We advise on the choice. The coaching we offer is for the SAT, GRE and IELTS only.
  • A second plan: what the student will do if the first choice does not work out.

How career counselling after 12th works

  • 1. A first conversation. We meet the student and parents and talk about marks, subjects, interests, budget and whether studying abroad is an option.
  • 2. The Career Fit assessment. Our in-house assessment of interests, aptitude and work style. Read more about the Career Fit assessment.
  • 3. Results checked in person. Dr. Manish Mittal and his team go through the results with the student in a live session before anything is recommended.
  • 4. A counselling session with the family. Dr. Manish Mittal and his team explain which courses fit and why, and answer the family’s questions.
  • 5. An action plan. Courses, colleges, entrance exams and application dates, written down in order.

What each stream leaves open

  • Science with Mathematics: engineering, computer science, architecture, pure sciences, economics and data science.
  • Science with Biology: medicine and allied health, pharmacy, biotechnology, life sciences and psychology.
  • Commerce: commerce and business degrees, economics, finance, and professional courses such as chartered accountancy.
  • Humanities: the social sciences, psychology, media, languages and public policy.

Law, design, liberal arts and management programmes are open to students of every stream, and so are many degrees abroad. The stream a student studied in Grades 11 and 12 narrows the choice less than most families expect.

Studying in India or abroad

We guide students in both directions. For students staying in India, we advise on public universities and on universities such as Ashoka, FLAME and Krea, which assess the whole application (essays, activities and interviews) as well as marks. See Study in India.

For students going abroad, we advise on the country, the universities, the applications and the visa. See study abroad consulting. Students who need to strengthen their application before applying continue with profile building.
