Stream Selection After 10th: Career Counselling in Grades 9 and 10
Choosing a stream after 10th: start the conversation in Grade 9
The stream is chosen after Grade 10, but the right time to begin career counselling is Grade 9, and Grade 10 is still in time. Career counselling is not a one-day event. It starts a conversation, and the student then needs months to explore what the assessment suggests before the family decides. At Global Careers in Surat, that process begins with our Career Fit assessment, checked with the student face to face, and continues with guided career exploration until the stream, the board and the subjects are clear.
The choice made after Grade 10 decides which degrees are still open two years later. A student who drops Mathematics gives up engineering and many economics programmes. A student who drops Biology gives up medicine. Many families still come to us in the last weeks before Grade 11 admission. We can help then too, but a decision of this size deserves more time.
Why Grade 9 is the right time
- Counselling is a beginning, not a verdict. The assessment tells us where to look. The student then tests those findings through career exploration: projects, short courses, competitions, summer programmes and conversations with people in the field. This is what profile building is for.
- Findings need time to be verified. An interest that survives a year of real activity can be trusted. One that fades has saved the family from the wrong stream.
- IGCSE and ICSE students choose earlier. They select their subjects for Grades 9 and 10 at the end of Grade 8, so they often need guidance a year before everyone else.
- IB students need the most clarity. In the IB Diploma, the subjects and levels chosen for Grades 11 and 12 have to match the degree the student will apply for. A student with excellent scores can still lose a place at a top university because a required subject was not taken.
What we help you decide
- Stream: Science (with Mathematics, Biology or both), Commerce (with or without Mathematics) or Humanities.
- Board: whether to continue with the present board or move to CBSE, ISC, the Gujarat board, the IB Diploma or Cambridge A Levels for Grades 11 and 12.
- Subjects: the optional subjects that keep the student’s preferred degrees open, in India and abroad.
- Direction after 12th: the kinds of courses and careers that suit the student, so that Grades 11 and 12 are spent with a purpose.
- Entrance exams: which exams are worth preparing for, such as JEE, NEET, CUET, IPMAT or CLAT, and which are not. We advise on the choice of exam. We do not coach for these exams.
How the process works
- 1. A first conversation. We meet the student and parents and talk about marks, favourite subjects, interests and what the family is hoping for.
- 2. The Career Fit assessment. The student takes our in-house assessment of interests, aptitude and work style. Read more about the Career Fit assessment.
- 3. Results checked in person. Dr. Manish Mittal and his team go through the results with the student in a live session, so that the report describes the student and not a rushed answer or a misread question.
- 4. A counselling session with the family. Dr. Manish Mittal and his team explain what the results suggest: the streams, subjects and careers worth exploring.
- 5. Career exploration. Over the following months the student tries those fields through projects, courses, competitions and conversations. This is the work of profile building.
- 6. Review and decision. We look at what the student has learned and settle the stream, the board and the subjects, with a written plan for Grades 11 and 12.
When the student and the parents want different streams
Many families come to us in the middle of a disagreement: the student wants Humanities and the parents want Science, or the other way round. Both sides usually have a point, and both are arguing from opinion.
The assessment gives everyone the same evidence to look at: where the student’s interests lie, which abilities are strong, and how the student prefers to work. Our role is to explain what that evidence means for each stream, including the options the family had not considered. The decision stays with the family.

Choose a counsellor the way you would choose a doctor or a lawyer
Career advice shapes the next ten years of a young person’s life. Take it from someone qualified, experienced and credible, whose record you can check, exactly as you would for medical or legal advice.
A cheap online test that produces an instant, AI-generated report feels like a saving. If it sends a student into the wrong stream or the wrong degree, it becomes the most expensive advice the family ever took. A report is useful only when a trained counsellor has checked it with the student and stays with the family through the decision.
Frequently asked questions
Grade 9 is ideal, and Grade 10 is still the right time. Students in IGCSE and ICSE schools often need guidance at the end of Grade 8, when they choose their subjects. Coming in the last weeks before Grade 11 admission is better than not coming at all, but it leaves no time to explore and verify what the assessment shows.
High marks show what a student can do in school exams. They do not show which subjects the student enjoys enough to study for the next five or six years, or what kind of work will suit them. Students who score well in everything often have the hardest choice, because every stream is open to them.
No. Career Fit is our own assessment. Dr. Manish Mittal and his team verify the results with the student in person, and he writes the report himself.
Sometimes, in the first few weeks, if the school has a seat and the board allows it. It becomes harder with every month, and the student has to catch up on the work missed. It is much better to decide before Grade 11 begins.
No. We advise on which entrance exams suit the student’s goals, but we do not coach for them. The coaching we offer is for the SAT, GRE and IELTS.
Yes. Students outside Surat take the assessment online and meet the counsellor on a video call. See how online career counselling works.

No. The first sessions and the assessment start the process. The student then explores the suggested fields through activities, and we review what they have learned before the final decision. That is why we recommend starting in Grade 9.
