Some UK master’s courses include a work placement or internship as part of the degree. These suit a student who wants experience in the field before the first job. Courses differ a lot, so the useful questions are the ones a family asks each university.
What an internship master’s means
The placement may be a short project with a company, a longer period of work, or a supervised industry project. Some universities help students find the placement and others expect students to find their own. The name of the course does not tell you which.
Questions to ask each university
- Is the placement part of the course, or an optional extra?
- Does the university find it, or does the student?
- Does it change the length of the course?
- Is it paid?
- What happens if the student cannot find a placement?
Student visa and placements
A student on a Student visa may have limits on work during term time, and the limit depends on the course and the university. A placement that is part of the course is usually allowed even when other employment is not. Confirm with the university’s international office before you accept an offer.
After the degree
The Graduate visa may let an eligible student stay and work after a UK degree. A placement helps a CV, but it does not replace the visa rules, and nobody can promise a job. Read Master’s in the UK for Indian students for the basics.

Frequently asked questions
Is an internship master’s longer than a normal one?
Sometimes. Some include the placement within the usual year and others add time. Check each course.
Can an Indian student work next to the course?
Possibly, within the limits of the Student visa. The limit depends on the university and the course.
Is an internship master’s better?
Only if it fits the student. A student with strong experience already may be better served by a focused academic course.
How do we compare courses?
We shortlist with the family and ask each university the questions above. Start with a free first team meeting at our Study Abroad service.
Can I discuss this with Global Careers in Surat?
Yes. Families from Vesu, Adajan, Citylight, Ghod Dod Road, Bhatar Road, Dumas, VIP Road, Rander and Varachha, and from Navsari and Bardoli, visit our New City Light office, and students across India work with us online. The first team meeting is free; a consultation with Dr. Mittal is always paid and by appointment.
