A sandwich degree adds a year of work experience in the middle of a UK bachelor’s. The student studies, spends a year in industry, then returns for the final year. It suits a student who wants practical experience and a stronger CV before graduating.
What a placement year is
A placement year is also called a sandwich year or a year in industry. It usually lasts nine to thirteen months and comes after the second year of a three-year degree. It can be in the field of the course or in a related career interest.
Two ways it appears
- Built into the course. The degree runs four years and the placement is part of it. These are listed on UCAS with names such as "with placement year" or "with sandwich placement".
- Added later. A student on a three-year course may switch to the four-year version after finding a placement. The student usually finds and applies for the placement.
Questions to ask each university
- Is the placement guaranteed, or does the student have to find it?
- Is there support from a careers team?
- Is the placement year paid? Some are, some are not.
- What happens if the student cannot find one?
Student visa and what comes after
A placement that is part of the course is usually allowed on a Student visa. Confirm with the university before accepting an offer. The Graduate visa may let an eligible student stay and work after the degree. A placement helps a CV but promises no job.
Is a sandwich degree right for us?
It suits a student who is sure of the subject and ready to work in a real office. A student who is still exploring may prefer a broader course. See UK or USA for Indian students.

Frequently asked questions
Does a placement year make the degree longer?
Yes. A sandwich degree usually takes four years instead of three.
Is the placement year paid?
It can be. Pay depends on the employer and the course.
Can a student switch to a sandwich course after joining a normal one?
Some universities allow it if the student finds a placement. Ask before applying.
Can a student apply from Class 12?
Yes. Applications go through UCAS, so subject and marks matter. We help the family plan from Class 11. See Study in the UK.
Can I discuss this with Global Careers in Surat?

Families from Vesu, Adajan, Citylight, Ghod Dod Road, Bhatar Road, Dumas, VIP Road, Rander and Varachha, and from Navsari and Bardoli, visit our New City Light office, and students across India work with us online.
