Several well-known UK scholarships are open to Indian students, but each has its own rules and all are competitive. This guide names the main ones and explains what a family should check first. Many of our students are offered a scholarship by at least one of the universities they apply to.
Chevening
Chevening is the UK government’s international scholarship scheme, supported by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. It funds a one-year master’s at a UK university and looks for people with ambition, leadership and a commitment to positive change in their home countries. Check the official Chevening site for the current rules and dates.
Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships
These are funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, with FCDO support. India is on the list of eligible countries. A student applies through a national nominating agency and to the university, and must be someone who could not afford UK study without the funding. Check the current round and the nominating agency before you plan.
GREAT Scholarships
The British Council runs GREAT Scholarships for Indian students. They support one-year postgraduate courses at a small set of participating UK universities. A student chooses a university from the list and applies through that university. Deadlines differ by university, and the list changes each year.
University scholarships
Many UK universities offer their own awards. These are usually decided with the admission offer or through a separate application. Each university explains its own rules on its website.
What to check before you plan around a scholarship
- Is the award for a master’s, a bachelor’s or both?
- Does it need a separate application, or is it considered with the course application?
- What is the deadline, and does it come before the course deadline?
- What does it cover, and what must the family still plan for?

Frequently asked questions
Can a family count on a scholarship?
No. Scholarships are competitive and no adviser can promise one. Plan the finances without it and treat an award as a bonus.
Do scholarships cover the full cost?
Some cover part of the tuition and some cover more. Always read what is included.
When do applications open?
Dates differ by scheme and university, and many fall well before the course begins. Start a year ahead.
Does a stronger profile help?
Yes. Marks matter, and so do activities, leadership and clear reasons for the course. See profile building.
Can I discuss this with Global Careers in Surat?
Yes. Families from Vesu, Adajan, Citylight, Ghod Dod Road, Bhatar Road, Dumas, VIP Road, Rander and Varachha, and from Navsari and Bardoli, visit our New City Light office, and students across India work with us online. The first team meeting is free; a consultation with Dr. Mittal is always paid and by appointment.
