A taught master’s in the UK is usually one year full time. That makes it shorter than master’s degrees in many other countries. It suits a student who already knows the subject and wants a focused year. This guide explains how it works, so a family can plan early.
What a UK master’s looks like
Most students take a taught master’s, such as an MSc, MA or MLitt. Some are specialist and some are career related. Shorter postgraduate diplomas and certificates also exist and carry less credit. A full-time master’s runs about twelve months.
Who it suits
- A student who is sure of the field and wants depth, not breadth.
- A student whose bachelor’s subjects match the master’s they want.
- A family that prefers a shorter, more focused period abroad.
A student who is unsure should start with career counselling before choosing a course. Families who want to compare India with abroad can read Master’s, MS, MSc and MBA admissions.
How to apply
Each university sets its own entry requirements, including the level of English. Students apply to the university for the course they want. Plan the shortlist early, because the strongest applications are built over the college years, not in the last few weeks. See profile building.
Student visa
A student applies for the Student visa after receiving an offer from a licensed UK university. From India the application can be made up to six months before the course starts. The applicant must also show enough money for the course and living costs.
After the degree
The Graduate visa lets eligible students stay and work after a UK degree. Its length changes for applications made from 1 January 2027, so check GOV.UK for the rule that applies to you. No country can promise a job after the degree.

Frequently asked questions
Is a UK master’s really one year?
Most full-time taught master’s courses are about twelve months. Some courses and part-time routes are longer, so check each one.
Can a student from any bachelor’s subject apply?
Each course sets its own requirements. Some accept a related subject and others ask for a closer match. Check the course page before shortlisting.
When should we start?
Students usually begin at the start of the third year of college. That leaves time to choose the subject, build a profile and prepare the applications.
Is India better than the UK for a master’s?
Neither is better in general. The choice depends on the student’s wish, ability and fit. We look at India and abroad together.
Can a UK master’s lead to a scholarship?
Many of our students are offered a scholarship by at least one of the universities they apply to. See UK scholarships for Indian students.
Can I discuss this with Global Careers in Surat?
