The right time to start career counselling is Grade 9. Grade 10 is still in time. The week before a stream or a college major has to be chosen is too late to do it properly. In India most families do it the other way round: they wait until after the Grade 10 or Grade 12 board exams and look for a quick answer. This guide explains why that rarely works and what to do instead.
Counselling is the start of a process, not a one-day event
Many people picture career counselling as a test, a report and a one-hour meeting. A good assessment is only the opening of a conversation. It shows where a student’s interests and abilities seem to lie. It does not prove it. The proof comes afterwards, when the student tries those fields in practice.
What should happen after the first session
We call it career exploration, and it is the reason profile building exists:
- projects and short courses in the fields the assessment pointed to;
- competitions, olympiads and summer programmes;
- conversations with students and professionals in those fields;
- a review with the counsellor of what the student enjoyed, what was hard and what has changed.
An interest that survives a year of real activity can be trusted. One that fades has saved the family from a wrong decision. A student who has explored also writes a far better college application, because there is something real to write about. Without this stage, even accurate counselling is only an opinion on paper.
Why Grade 9, and not after the board exams
- Time. Exploration needs a year or more. A student who starts in Grade 9 reaches the stream decision with evidence. A student who starts after the Grade 10 results has a few weeks.
- Pressure. In Grade 9 there is room to try things and be wrong. In the weeks after board results, families decide under pressure and follow marks, friends or fashion.
- Subjects decide degrees. The stream and subjects chosen for Grades 11 and 12 open some degrees and close others.
Students who need to start even earlier
IGCSE and ICSE students choose their subjects for Grades 9 and 10 at the end of Grade 8. They often need guidance a year before students of other boards.
IB students need the most clarity of all. In the IB Diploma, the subjects and the levels at which they are taken have to match the degree the student will apply for. Many families do not realise that a student with excellent scores can still lose a place at a top university because a required subject was missing or was taken at the wrong level. That choice is made before Grade 11, so the direction has to be clear before then.
Who should you take advice from?
Choose a career counsellor as you would choose a doctor or a lawyer: for qualifications, experience and a record you can check. The cheap alternative is an online test that produces an instant, AI-generated report. It looks like a saving. A report that nobody has checked with the student, followed by no exploration, can send a young person into the wrong stream or degree. That is far more expensive in the long run than proper counselling would have been.
If you are already late
Come anyway. A careful decision made in Grade 10, or even after the results, is better than a guess. But tell the next family you know with a child in Grade 8 or 9 not to wait.
How we work at Global Careers
Career counselling at Global Careers begins with the Career Fit assessment, verified with the student in person, and a session with the family. It continues with profile building, where the findings are tested, and a review before each decision: stream selection in Grades 9 and 10, then course and college selection in Grades 11 and 12.
